Mission Profile

COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation (CSG) is Italy's second-generation X-band synthetic aperture radar Earth observation satellite constellation, developed by the Italian Space Agency and Italian Ministry of Defence as an upgraded follow-on to the original COSMO-SkyMed constellation. First launched in December 2019, the CSG satellites provide enhanced SAR imaging with improved resolution, greater frequency agility, and longer service life than their predecessors, supporting civil protection, environmental monitoring, and national security applications. The constellation supports emergency response to floods, earthquakes, and industrial accidents in near-real time with all-weather, day-night imaging capability over the Mediterranean basin and beyond.
