Gemini-Centaur
🇺🇸Mission Profile
Gemini-Centaur was a proposed configuration pairing the Gemini spacecraft with an integral Centaur cryogenic upper stage to enable Gemini missions to much higher energy orbits, including Earth-escape trajectories and potential circumlunar flights. Studied in the early-to-mid 1960s as one of several options for extending Gemini's mission beyond low Earth orbit, it would have allowed Gemini crews to conduct deep-space research without waiting for the Apollo program. The concept was not pursued as NASA centralized lunar exploration planning around Apollo, and the complexity of integrating a cryogenic stage with the Gemini capsule posed significant engineering challenges.
