Mission Profile

SAMPEX (Solar Anomalous and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer, Explorer 68) is a NASA small scientific satellite launched on 3 July 1992 to study the composition and energy spectra of solar energetic particles, anomalous cosmic rays, and magnetospheric electrons. Orbiting in a low-altitude polar orbit, it provided continuous measurements of particle populations that cause radiation belt dynamics and space weather effects. SAMPEX was the first mission of NASA's Small Explorer (SMEX) program, demonstrating that capable science could be accomplished with small, low-cost spacecraft. The mission operated far beyond its planned three-year lifetime, finally deorbiting in 2012 after two decades of service.
