Mission Profile

Almaz Commercial was a proposal by NPO Mashinostroyenia and its commercial spin-off Almaz-Antey to offer a modernized version of the original Almaz military space station platform for commercial remote sensing and research operations, drawing on the Almaz OPS station hardware heritage from the 1970s. The concept envisioned a free-flying station capable of hosting commercial payloads for remote sensing, materials science, and biotechnology, using the proven pressure hull and propulsion systems of the original Almaz design updated with modern electronics and solar power systems. The commercial Almaz concept was pursued in the 1990s following declassification of the military Almaz program but never secured sufficient commercial investment to proceed to development.
