Hope-X
🇯🇵Mission Profile
Hope-X was a proposed Japanese experimental reentry vehicle concept studied around 2003 as a smaller and simpler technology demonstrator than the full-scale H-II Orbiting Plane (HOPE-X) spaceplane that NASDA had been developing. The HOPE-X program aimed to give Japan an indigenous crewed or cargo orbital reentry capability, with the demonstrator vehicle intended to validate thermal protection systems, aerodynamics, and autonomous landing at reduced scale before committing to a full operational vehicle. The program was cancelled in 2003 following budget constraints and a reassessment of priorities, with Japan choosing instead to contribute to the ISS through the HTV cargo vehicle and focus on other space science programs.
