Buran
🇷🇺Mission Profile
Buran is the Soviet Union's only operational space shuttle orbiter, which completed a single uncrewed orbital test flight on 15 November 1988 powered by the Energia super-heavy launcher before the program was indefinitely suspended following the Soviet collapse. Unlike the US Shuttle, Buran had no main engines on the orbiter — propulsion was provided entirely by the Energia core stage — and featured a fully automatic landing system that successfully guided it to a precision runway landing without a crew aboard. Buran represented the culmination of a decade of Soviet effort to match American Shuttle capability, reportedly driven by concerns that the US Shuttle could be used as a space weapon. The program was officially cancelled in 1993, and the only flight-qualified orbiter was destroyed when the Baikonur hangar roof collapsed in 2002.
