Mission Profile

Venera 9 (4V-1 No. 660) was a Soviet spacecraft launched on 8 June 1975 aboard a Proton K/D consisting of an orbiter and a lander, completing the first orbital and surface operations at Venus as a combined system. The lander successfully descended through the Venusian atmosphere on 22 October 1975 and transmitted the first panoramic photographs from the surface of Venus, revealing a landscape of sharp-edged rocks implying geological youth and active resurfacing. The orbiter became the first spacecraft to orbit Venus, studying the planet's atmosphere and cloud structure through its ultraviolet, infrared, and radio instrumentation. Venera 9's photographs fundamentally changed our understanding of Venus from a world with ancient, heavily eroded surface to one with dynamic geological activity.
