First Lunar Outpost Spacecraft
🇺🇸FLO
Mission Profile
First Lunar Outpost Spacecraft (FLO) was a NASA concept from 1992 for a large crewed lunar lander that could deliver four astronauts directly to the lunar surface for 45-day stays without a separate lunar orbital station, proposed under the Space Exploration Initiative. Launched by a Comet Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle, the FLO spacecraft was designed as a single large vehicle combining crew quarters, life support, scientific equipment, and propulsion — far larger than the Apollo Lunar Module — enabling extended geological surveys and infrastructure emplacement. The concept was never funded as the Space Exploration Initiative was cancelled due to its estimated $400 billion cost.
