Mission Profile

Zond (Soyuz 7K-L1) is the Soviet spacecraft used in the Zond program to conduct uncrewed circumlunar flights between 1967 and 1970, testing the spacecraft systems intended to carry Soviet cosmonauts around the Moon before America's Apollo 8 mission. Based on a stripped-down Soyuz 7K-OK with the orbital module removed to save mass, it was launched atop a Proton rocket and followed a free-return trajectory around the Moon, returning photographs and biological experiments. Six Zond missions reached the Moon's vicinity, with Zond 5 through 8 successfully returning to Earth, though significant guidance and reentry issues prevented confident qualification for crewed flight. The Zond program was quietly cancelled after Apollo 11 eliminated the propaganda value of a Soviet circumlunar mission.
