Mission Profile

L3M Lunar Complex was a Soviet concept from around 1970 for an expanded lunar landing system intended to follow the initial L3 crewed landing, featuring a more capable lander and a lunar surface stay measured in days rather than hours. The concept was studied in the context of the N1F — an uprated version of the N1 rocket — that would have provided the additional mass margin for a larger, more capable lunar expedition. The L3M remained a design study as the Soviet lunar program never recovered from the N1's repeated launch failures, and the entire Soviet crewed lunar program was officially cancelled in 1974. It represents the ambitious second-generation Soviet lunar exploration architecture that was never realized.
