Mission Profile

The EMD SW-8 Titan Mover is a specialized rail locomotive used at various US Air Force bases and launch facilities to transport the Titan ICBM and Titan launch vehicle family horizontally from integration buildings to their launch silos or pads. The SW-8 switcher locomotive, manufactured by Electro-Motive Division, was adapted for this role given its compact dimensions and sufficient tractive force for moving the Titan missile transporter railcars within confined facility layouts. As a niche piece of Cold War launch infrastructure supporting the Titan I, Titan II, and subsequently the Titan III and IV programs, the Titan Mover represents the ground transportation link in the horizontal integration and roll-out process common to all members of the Titan launch vehicle family.
