Mission Profile
The Ares I (Crew Launch Vehicle, CLV) was a proposed two-stage American crew launch vehicle concept in the STS family, using a five-segment Shuttle-derived solid rocket booster first stage and a J-2X-powered cryogenic upper stage under the Constellation programme. Standing 94 m tall with a 3.7 m upper stage diameter and a projected liftoff mass of 907 tonnes, it would have generated 15,600 kN of first-stage thrust and delivered 25,400 kg to low Earth orbit. Conceived around 2010, the Ares I conducted a single suborbital test flight (Ares I-X) in October 2009 before the Constellation programme was cancelled in 2010.
