Mission Profile

The Delta D (Thor-Delta D, DSV-3D) was a three-stage American launch vehicle in the Delta family, a variant with a longer-burn second stage for improved performance. Standing 28 m tall with a 2.4 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 57 tonnes, it generated 758 kN of first-stage thrust and could deliver 400 kg to low Earth orbit. First flying in August 1964, the Delta D launched the Syncom 3 satellite, which provided the first live television broadcast from a geostationary orbit during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
