Mission Profile

The Thor DM-18 Able (PGM-17A Able, Thor-Able) was a two-stage American launch vehicle in the Delta family, an early configuration pairing a Thor IRBM with a Vanguard-derived Able upper stage under the Thor IRBM Program. Standing 27 m tall with a 2.4 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 49.9 tonnes, it generated 667 kN of first-stage thrust. First flying in April 1958, the Thor-Able attempted some of the earliest American lunar probe missions including Pioneer 0 and was the direct ancestor of the entire Delta launch vehicle family.
