Mission Profile

The Atlas SLV3C Centaur D Star 37E was a two-to-three-stage American launch vehicle in the Atlas family, adding a Star 37E solid-fuelled kick stage to the Atlas-Centaur for high-energy escape trajectories. Standing 36.6 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 136 tonnes, it generated 1,880 kN of liftoff thrust. First flying in March 1972, the Atlas SLV3C Centaur D Star 37E launched NASA's Pioneer 10 to Jupiter, the first spacecraft to traverse the asteroid belt and reach the outer solar system.
