Mission Profile

The Ares V (Cargo Launch Vehicle, CaLV) was a proposed two-stage American super-heavy launch vehicle concept in the STS family, the cargo variant of NASA's Constellation programme designed to launch lunar mission hardware. Standing 116.2 m tall with a 10 m core diameter and a projected liftoff mass of 3,704 tonnes, it would have generated 42,000 kN of liftoff thrust and delivered 187,700 kg to low Earth orbit. Conceived around 2010 under the Constellation programme, the Ares V was cancelled along with the rest of Constellation in 2010, though elements of its design influenced the Space Launch System.
