Mission Profile

Space Shuttle (Space Transportation System, STS) is NASA's partially reusable crewed orbital transportation system, consisting of a winged orbiter, external propellant tank, and two solid rocket boosters that together produced 30,700 kN of thrust at liftoff. Standing 56.1 meters to the top of the orbiter with a 2,040-tonne liftoff mass and 27,500 kg payload capacity to LEO, it first flew on 12 April 1981 and completed 135 missions over 30 years before retirement in 2011. The Shuttle deployed the Hubble Space Telescope, assembled the International Space Station, and carried 355 individual astronauts to space across its historic operational career.
