Mission Profile

The Ariane 40 (AR40, A40) was a three-stage European launch vehicle in the Ariane 4 family, the baseline configuration without any strap-on boosters. Standing 58.4 m tall with a 3.8 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 240 tonnes, it generated 2,772 kN of liftoff thrust and could deliver 2,020 kg to geostationary transfer orbit. First flying in January 1990, the Ariane 40 was the lightest Ariane 4 variant, used for smaller commercial and institutional payloads where the additional strap-on booster performance was not needed.
