Mission Profile

The Redstone (PGM-11) was a single-stage American ballistic missile and launch vehicle in the Redstone family, the US Army's first large liquid-fuelled rocket directly descended from the V-2 and designed by Wernher von Braun's team. Standing 21.1 m tall with a 1.8 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 27.8 tonnes, it generated 347 kN of thrust. First flying in August 1953, the Redstone served as both a battlefield nuclear weapon delivery system and a space launch vehicle, famously lofting Alan Shepard on America's first crewed spaceflight in May 1961.
