Mission Profile

The Pegasus XL HAPS (Pegasus XL High Altitude Precision Strike) was a three-to-four-stage American air-launched launch vehicle in the Pegasus family, a modified Pegasus XL configured with a hypersonic payload adapter for weapons testing. Standing 17.6 m long with a 1.3 m diameter and an air-launch mass of 23.6 tonnes, it generated 726 kN of first-stage thrust and could deliver 475 kg to low Earth orbit. First flying in December 1997, the Pegasus XL HAPS provided hypersonic flight conditions for testing precision-guided reentry systems.
