Mission Profile

The Scout X-4 (Scout X4) was a four-stage American launch vehicle in the Scout family, an improved variant with a new Castor II second stage for increased performance. Standing 22 m tall with a 1.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 21 tonnes, it generated 464 kN of first-stage thrust and could deliver 85 kg to low Earth orbit. First flying in June 1963, the Scout X-4 continued NASA's programme of dedicated small scientific satellite launches from Wallops Island and other sites.
