Mission Profile

The DC-XA (Delta Clipper Experimental Advanced) was a single-stage American reusable launch vehicle technology demonstrator in the DC-X family, an upgraded version of the DC-X transferred to NASA under the SDIO/DC-X programme. Standing 12.1 m tall with a 4.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 19.1 tonnes, it generated 267 kN of thrust from four RL-10A-5 engines. First flying in May 1996, the DC-XA demonstrated key reusable VTVL technologies including a composite liquid hydrogen tank and rapid turnaround operations before being destroyed in a landing accident on its fourth flight.
