Mission Profile
The Atlas LV3C Centaur D was a two-stage American launch vehicle in the Atlas family, an early operational combination of the Atlas booster with the pioneering Centaur high-energy hydrogen/oxygen upper stage. Standing 36.6 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 136 tonnes, it generated 1,880 kN of liftoff thrust and could deliver 3,600 kg to low Earth orbit. First flying in August 1965, the Atlas LV3C Centaur D launched Surveyor lunar landers that paved the way for the Apollo Moon landings and demonstrated the Centaur's revolutionary cryogenic technology.
