Mission Profile

The Thor DM-18 Able 1 (Able 3, Able 4) was a two-stage American launch vehicle in the Delta family, an early Thor-Able combination pairing the Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile with an Able upper stage under the Thor IRBM Program. Standing 27 m tall with a 2.4 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 49.9 tonnes, it generated 667 kN of first-stage thrust. First flying in August 1958, the Thor Able was used for early lunar probe attempts including the Pioneer programme, making it one of the first American vehicles designed for deep space missions.
