Mission Profile

The Atlas E OIS (CGM-16E OIS) was a two-to-three-stage American launch vehicle in the Atlas family, a refurbished Atlas E ICBM paired with an Orbit Insertion Stage for placing military payloads into precise orbits under the Atlas ICBM Program. Standing 25.1 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 118 tonnes, it generated 1,630 kN of liftoff thrust. First flying in March 1985, the Atlas E OIS launched NOAA weather satellites and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program payloads from Vandenberg Air Force Base, extending the operational life of retired Atlas ICBMs.
