Mission Profile

The Atlas B SCORE (SM-65B, Project SCORE) was a two-stage American launch vehicle in the Atlas family, a modified Atlas B ICBM used for the world's first communications satellite experiment under the Atlas ICBM Program. Standing 24.9 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 117 tonnes, it generated 1,630 kN of liftoff thrust. First flying in December 1958, the Atlas B SCORE placed the entire Atlas sustainer stage with an attached communications relay into orbit, broadcasting President Eisenhower's Christmas message from space — the first voice broadcast from orbit.
