Mission Profile

The Unha 3 (은하 3호, Galaxy 3) was a three-stage North Korean launch vehicle in the Unha family, the rocket that successfully placed North Korea's first satellite into orbit. Standing 30 m tall with a 2.4 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 91 tonnes, it generated 1,200 kN of liftoff thrust and could deliver approximately 100 kg to low Earth orbit. First flying in April 2012, the Unha 3 successfully orbited the Kwangmyŏngsŏng-4 satellite in December 2012, making North Korea the tenth nation to achieve independent orbital launch capability, though the launches drew international condemnation as disguised ballistic missile tests.
