Mission Profile

The J-I (J-1) was a three-stage Japanese launch vehicle in the Mu family, designed as a cost-effective small satellite launcher combining an H-II solid rocket booster first stage with Mu-series upper stages. Standing 33.1 m tall with a 1.8 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 88.5 tonnes, it generated 2,680 kN of liftoff thrust and could deliver 860 kg to low Earth orbit. First and only flying in February 1996, the J-I successfully launched but was deemed too expensive for its payload class and was cancelled after a single flight.
