Mission Profile

The Atlas SLV3C Centaur D was a two-stage American launch vehicle in the Atlas family, pairing the Atlas SLV-3C booster with the Centaur D high-energy hydrogen/oxygen upper stage for interplanetary and high-orbit missions. Standing 36.6 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 136 tonnes, it generated 1,880 kN of liftoff thrust and could deliver 3,600 kg to low Earth orbit. First flying in September 1967, the Atlas SLV3C Centaur D launched several Surveyor lunar landers, Mariner planetary probes, and early communications satellites.
