Mission Profile

The Vanguard (TV-2) was a three-stage American launch vehicle in the Viking family, developed under Project Vanguard as the United States' first dedicated satellite launch vehicle for the International Geophysical Year. Standing 21.9 m tall with a 1.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 10 tonnes, it generated 132 kN of first-stage thrust. First flying in October 1957, the Vanguard programme suffered early public failures but ultimately succeeded in placing Vanguard 1 into orbit in March 1958 — a satellite that remains the oldest artificial object still in orbit.
