Mission Profile

The Wright Flyer (Wright Flyer I, 1903 Wright Flyer) was a single-stage American powered aircraft, the world's first successful heavier-than-air powered flying machine. With a 12.3 m wingspan and a mass of 340 kg, it was a biplane glider fitted with a purpose-built gasoline engine and twin pusher propellers. First flying on 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Flyer achieved the milestone of controlled, sustained, powered heavier-than-air flight, fundamentally changing human transportation and inspiring the aerospace age that followed.
