Mission Profile
The Atlas D (SM-65D, CGM-16D) was a two-stage American launch vehicle in the Atlas family, the first operational variant of the Atlas ICBM to serve as a space launch vehicle. Standing 25.1 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 118 tonnes, it generated 1,630 kN of liftoff thrust. First flying in April 1959 under the Atlas ICBM Program, the Atlas D launched the Mercury-Atlas crewed orbital flights and early reconnaissance satellites, establishing the Atlas as a foundational American space launch platform.
