Mission Profile

Mercury Abort Test (also called Mercury Abort Test Vehicle or Beach Abort) was a solid-propellant test vehicle used to validate the Launch Escape System for Project Mercury. First flown on 9 May 1960, the single-stage vehicle conducted pad abort and tower escape tests to ensure the capsule could safely carry astronauts away from a failing rocket during ascent. These tests were critical for crew safety certification before human missions began.
