Mission Profile

Ariane 1 was Europe's first independent orbital launch vehicle, developed by ESA to provide autonomous access to space. Standing 47.4 meters tall and generating 2,772 kN at liftoff, the three-stage rocket made its maiden flight on 24 December 1979 from Kourou, successfully placing a payload into geostationary transfer orbit. Ariane 1 established ESA as a major launch services provider and launched the commercially successful Ariane rocket dynasty.
