Mission Profile

Mercury-Redstone Launch Vehicle (MRLV) was a modified version of the US Army's PGM-11 Redstone ballistic missile adapted by von Braun's team for NASA's Project Mercury. Standing 25.4 meters tall with a single Rocketdyne A-7 engine producing 347 kN, it carried America's first astronauts — Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom — on suborbital missions in 1961. Though limited to suborbital flight, MRLV was a critical stepping stone toward human orbital spaceflight.
