Mission Profile

Athena I (originally Lockheed Launch Vehicle) is a small solid-propellant orbital launch vehicle developed by Lockheed Martin using heritage Minuteman and Thiokol Castor motors. Standing 18.9 meters tall with a 794 kg LEO capability, it first flew on 15 August 1995 and offered a commercial low-cost option for small satellite deployment. The vehicle successfully placed several Earth observation and science payloads into orbit before commercial demand shifted to larger vehicles.
