Mission Profile

Atlas C Able was an early upper-stage configuration combining the SM-65C Atlas booster with the Vanguard-derived Able upper stage for lunar and planetary probe attempts. Flying in 1959 under the Atlas ICBM program, the two- to three-stage vehicle stood 28 meters tall and produced 1,630 kN of thrust from its Atlas core engines. It represented one of America's early bids to reach the Moon and conduct interplanetary science.
