Mission Profile

Delta 3920 PAM-D is a variant of the Thor-derived Delta family featuring a larger 2.4-meter fairing, Thiokol Castor IV strap-on boosters, and a McDonnell Douglas Payload Assist Module upper stage. The three-stage vehicle first flew on 26 August 1982 and was optimized for delivering commercial communications satellites to geostationary transfer orbit. It represents the evolution of the Delta rocket toward greater commercial launch capability in the early 1980s.
