Mission Profile
VentureStar was Lockheed Martin's proposed full-scale single-stage-to-orbit reusable launch vehicle, envisioned as a successor to the X-33 technology demonstrator under NASA's Reusable Launch Vehicle program. The 38.7-meter tall spaceplane would have used a revolutionary aerospike engine and composite fuel tanks to reach orbit without staging, targeting up to 20,000 kg to LEO. Cost overruns and composite tank failures during X-33 testing led to the cancellation of both the demonstrator and VentureStar in 2001.
