Mission Profile

Kosmos-2 (also known as 11K63) is a Soviet small satellite launch vehicle derived from the R-12 Dvina intermediate-range ballistic missile. Developed in the early 1960s, it was designed to place lightweight military and scientific satellites into low Earth orbit from Kapustin Yar. Standing 31 meters tall with a liftoff mass of 109 tonnes, the two-stage vehicle generated 990 kN of thrust and could deliver up to 450 kg to LEO. It made its maiden flight on 16 March 1962, becoming a workhorse of the early Soviet space program alongside its companion Kosmos-1 launcher.
