Mission Profile

Atlas F OIS (Orbital Insertion Stage) was a modified variant of the Atlas F ICBM configured with a specialized upper stage to provide precise orbital delivery for military payloads requiring exact insertion into specific orbits. Standing 25.1 meters tall and weighing 118,000 kg at liftoff, it generated 1,630 kN of thrust from its Atlas F core stage. First flying in February 1979 as part of the long-running Atlas ICBM derivative launch vehicle program, it demonstrated the adaptability of the Atlas airframe to specialized mission requirements, continuing the Atlas F's transition from nuclear deterrent missile to versatile space launch platform across its operational life.
