Mission Profile

OTRAG (Orbital Transport und Raketen AG) was a pioneering West German commercial rocket venture of the late 1970s and early 1980s that sought to radically reduce launch costs through a modular design using clusters of standardized, inexpensive propellant tubes that could be bundled in varying configurations. Founded by Lutz Kayser, it was among the world's first commercial space launch companies, conducting test flights from a private launch site in Zaire beginning in May 1977. The program attracted both fascination and controversy — major space powers, wary of the potential for proliferating ICBM technology, applied diplomatic pressure that ultimately forced OTRAG to relocate and eventually cease operations before achieving orbital flight. Its legacy lives on as an early visionary attempt to commercialize space access decades before the new space era.
