Mission Profile

VLS-1 (Veículo Lançador de Satélites) was Brazil's first domestically developed orbital launch vehicle, a four-stage solid-propellant rocket built by the Brazilian Air Force's Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) to provide independent space access. Standing 19.5 meters tall with a launch mass of 50,700 kg and generating 2,860 kN of thrust, it was designed to place 380 kg into low Earth orbit. After two failed test flights in 1997 and 1999, a catastrophic pad explosion in August 2003 killed 21 technicians and destroyed the vehicle, effectively ending the program and dealing a severe blow to Brazil's aspirations for sovereign orbital launch capability. The VLS-1 tragedy remains one of the most devastating accidents in spaceflight history.
