Mission Profile
The Atlas F Star 37S ISS was a launch configuration pairing the Atlas F ICBM booster with a Star 37S Inertial Upper Stage solid motor for placing small payloads directly into high-energy synchronous orbits beyond what the standard Atlas F could achieve. Standing 25.1 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 118 tonnes, its stage-and-a-half configuration generated 1,630 kN of thrust and first flew in October 1978. This configuration exemplified the extended commercial and scientific life given to surplus Atlas F airframes after their retirement from strategic missile service, enabling precision orbit injection for government research satellites.
