Mission Profile

The Titan II X-20 Dyna-Soar configuration was a proposed American launch vehicle pairing the Titan II ICBM with Boeing's X-20 Dyna-Soar orbital spaceplane, intended to be the dedicated launch system for the Air Force's hypersonic orbital vehicle program. Standing 33.2 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 154 tonnes, it would have generated 1,913 kN of thrust to boost the X-20 to orbit. The X-20 Dyna-Soar program was cancelled in December 1963 before any crewed orbital flight, but its studies substantially advanced understanding of hypersonic reentry aerodynamics and orbital winged vehicle design that influenced future programs including the Space Shuttle.
