Mission Profile

The Jupiter-246 Lunar EDS (Earth Departure Stage) was a DIRECT v3.0 concept proposing to use the Jupiter-246 heavy-lift rocket to launch a large restartable Earth Departure Stage for crewed deep space missions beyond low Earth orbit. Standing 94 m tall with a 10 m diameter core and a three-stage configuration leveraging Space Shuttle Main Engines and solid rocket boosters, it was designed to deliver Orion and the EDS to translunar injection. The DIRECT team proposed this configuration as an alternative to NASA's Ares V that could be developed more quickly using proven Shuttle-era hardware and existing manufacturing infrastructure.
