Mission Profile

The Jupiter (PGM-19) was an early American intermediate-range ballistic missile developed by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency under Wernher von Braun, designed to deliver a nuclear warhead to targets up to 2,400 km away from land-based launch sites. Standing 18.3 m tall with a 2.7 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 49,900 kg, it generated 667 kN of thrust from a single Rocketdyne S-3D engine. Deployed in Turkey and Italy from 1961, the Jupiter became historically significant during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and its airframe was repurposed as the first stage of the Juno II scientific launch vehicle.
