Mission Profile

The Sputnik (8A91) was a Soviet launch vehicle derived directly from the R-7 ICBM, representing one of the earliest dedicated modifications of the R-7 airframe for orbital satellite launch missions. Standing 29.2 m tall with a 3 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 267 tonnes, it generated 3,900 kN of thrust and could deliver 500 kg to low Earth orbit. First flown in April 1958, it was used for early Sputnik and first-generation scientific satellite missions, establishing the R-7 family's unbroken 65-plus-year legacy as the foundational launch vehicle of Soviet and Russian human spaceflight.
