Mission Profile

The H-II S (H-2S or H-II Simplified) was a cost-optimized variant of Japan's H-II launch vehicle, developed in the late 1990s to address the high per-flight costs that made the standard H-II commercially uncompetitive against international alternatives. Standing 49 m tall with a 4 m diameter and a two-stage liquid-propellant configuration, it retained the LE-7 first-stage cryogenic engine but introduced manufacturing simplifications to reduce costs and improve reliability. Though ultimately superseded by the more comprehensive H-IIA redesign, the H-II S program contributed directly to the engineering decisions that made H-IIA the durable success the H-II program never became.
