Mission Profile

The Atlas F Agena D was a two-to-three-stage American launch vehicle pairing the Atlas F ICBM booster with the versatile Agena D restartable upper stage, adapted for launching reconnaissance satellites and experimental payloads from operational Atlas F airframes. Standing 33 m tall with a 3.1 m diameter and a liftoff mass of 120 tonnes, it generated 1,630 kN of first-stage thrust. First flying in June 1978 under the Atlas ICBM Program, it extended the operational life of surplus Atlas F boosters through conversion for space launch after their retirement from strategic missile service.
